At times an innovative reading by the director succeeds in casting an entire repertoire in a new light: this has been the case with Mario Martone’s interpretation of Verismo works such as La cena delle beffe, Andrea Chénier, and Fedora. His first step in this adventure was a diptych combining Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci with Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana in 2011, characterized by a streamlined realism.
