In brief
The encounter between the atmospheres of European Romanticism
and the language of Italian Bel Canto gave rise
to an extraordinarily rich body of works, whose pinnacle is
undoubtedly Gaetano Donizetti’s so-called “Tudor Trilogy”.
Historical events and sentimental intrigues are treated by the
composer and his librettist Felice Romani with poetic momentum
and unfailing dramatic effectiveness, creating unforgettable
female characters destined for the great protagonists
of the stage. Today La Scala revives the title after the great
productions of the past, engaging artists of proven experience
in Italian opera such as conductor Francesco Ivan Ciampa,
making his debut, and director Chiara Muti. The formidable
leading roles are entrusted to Vasilisa Berzhanskaya, Roberto
Tagliavini and Juan Diego Flórez.
