In brief
In a picturesque nineteenth-century Spain, during the Napoleonic occupation, the troubled love between the French officer Lucien d’Hervilly and the gypsy girl Paquita is crowned with a rightful marriage after various adventures and revelations. A specialist in the reconstruction of the Romantic repertoire, Pierre Lacotte revived this historic title in 2001, recovering a lost heritage and giving new life to a ballet that breaks away from the cliché of the ballet blanc, focusing instead on a realistic story and a flesh-and-blood heroine. With its important debut in 2025, in a production created especially by Luisa Spinatelli, the Ballet Company of La Scala added its first Paquita to the repertoire. It now returns to the stage with its intricate plot serving as the framework for an exhilarating showcase of great dance, lyricism and virtuosity, culminating in the world-famous Grand Pas of Act II.
