In brief
Since its creation in 2016 as an exclusive production for English National Ballet, Akram Khan's acclaimed full-length reimagining of Giselle will now be shared with the artists of La Scala Ballet, inviting them into Khan's distinctive choreographic world. Renowned for his visceral movement language, rooted in Kathak and contemporary, and as one of the most celebrated and respected dance artists of our time, Akram Khan has reimagined the greatest romantic ballet and its tale of love, betrayal and redemption, setting it within a community of migrants - workers marginalised by the aristocracy - in a derelict factory, with vengeful ghosts lurking in the shadows. Though radically reinvented, the essence of Giselle continues to resonate throughout Vincenzo Lamagna's sonic world and score, which incorporates elements of the original by Adolphe Adam, as well as through its universal themes of empathy and forgiveness.
