NOTES ON THE PERFORMANCE
The rebellion of the Old Believers against the innovative impetus of Peter the Great, led by Prince Khovansky, is brought back to life by Mario Martone, expert director of historical sagas and great mass scenes, with sets by Margherita Palli and the inspirational conductor of the 1998 production, Valery Gergiev, on the orchestra podium. Khovanshchina, an imposing and impressive opera, has graced the stages of both La Scala and the Bolshoi Theatre, with particularly memorable performances by Gia nandrea Gavazzeni in 1967 and 1971, and Yuri Ljubimov in 1981.
