In brief
With the most eagerly awaited production of the Christmas festivities, the new Ballet Season opens. The Nutcracker by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, in Rudolf Nureyev's version, has enchanted audiences at Teatro alla Scala since 1969, with the historic production by Nicholas Georgiadis renewed in décor and costumes by La Scala itself in 1987. From the children’s dances to the homely Christmas celebrations, from the battle between mice and toy soldiers to the splendour of the snowflakes, music and choreography converge in the marvellous choreographic designs of the famous waltzes. The dances and pas de deux, rich in technique, rigour, line and balance, reveal the dramaturgical approach that Nureyev wished to confer upon this ballet: between shadows and light, the journey of an adolescent girl, Clara’s dream.
