Staged exclusively for the television broadcast in 2021, Damiano Michieletto’s production of Salome finally meets a live audience with Axel Kober and Michael Güttler on the podium. The rigorous geometrical scenes by Paolo Fantin, overhung by an ill-boding black moon, are populated with references to symbolist painting, becoming the theatre of a murky tragedy of childhood. Vida Miknevičiūtė debuts at La Scala in the title role, while Michael Volle endows Jochanaan with his powerful voice.
Due to illness Zubin Mehta has to withdrawn from Salome.
