Performed as yet only by the Paris Opera Ballett, for which it was created in 1992, Nureyev’s La bayadère will be staged for the first time at La Scala with new sets and costumes by Luisa Spinatelli. This is an extraordinary debut for a sumptuous production, rich in virtuoso performances and variations. It concludes with a return to the purity of classical ballet, with the entire corps on stage in white tutus in the Kingdom of the Shades, a tableau that opened the way to the success of this ballet in the West and Nureyev’s shining star.
