NOTES ON THE PERFORMANCE

With this new production La Scala inaugurates a Baroque project, which will continue in the coming years with two other titles by Händel, Agrippina and Ariodante. This staging of Giulio Cesare in Egitto, performed at la Scala only once before in 1957 under the direction of Gianandrea Gavazzeni, marks the return of Robert Carsen with a stellar cast featuring Philippe Jaroussky and Bejun Mehta. Giovanni Antonini will conduct the Baroque ensemble of the theatre’s Orchestra following its applauded performances of Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno and Tamerlano by Händel and La finta giardiniera by Mozart in recent seasons.
