On Sunday 3 July Arcadi Volodos, one of the world's best-loved pianists, makes his recital debut at La Scala with a programme that combines Franz Schubert's Sonata D 850 with Robert Schumann's Kindesrzenen and Fantasie Op. 17. Daniil Trifonov, is forced to withdraw from his concert and we would like to thank Arcadi Volodos for his availability to take on the concert.
The recital debut is not an absolute La Scala debut for Volodos: the Philharmonic invited him in 2011 to perform Tchaikovsky's Concerto No. 1 under the baton of Riccardo Chailly and in 2019 for Beethoven's Concerto No. 3 with Michele Mariotti.
Born in St Petersburg in 1972, Arcadi Volodos began his musical studies with singing lessons and orchestral conducting. Starting in 1987, he embarked on a serious study of the piano at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, later perfecting his skills with Galina Egiazarova at Moscow Conservatory and later in Paris and Madrid. Since his debut in New York in 1996, Volodos has worked with major orchestras including the Berliner Philharmoniker, Israel Philharmonic, London Philharmonia Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw, Staatskapelle Dresden, Orchestre de Paris, Leipzig Gewandhausorchester, Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra, Boston and Chicago Symphony.
He has collaborated with leading conductors including Myung-Whun Chung, Lorin Maazel, Valery Gergiev, James Levine, Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Paavo Järvi, Christoph Eschenbach, Semyon Bychkov and Riccardo Chailly.
