Films
Wagner is part of history and reaches beyond the stage. La Scala, therefore, has decided to offer audiences of the Ring a portrait of the composer and man of the theatre, in two great films. Both will be shown in the sala del Piermarini, and are very different from, but complementary to each other.
The first is amasterpiece: Ludwig (1973), directed by Luchino Visconti, who founded modern operatic direction at La Scala and towhomthe Theatre pays homage. The second is Tony Palmer’s Wagner (1983) with a star-studded cast, including Richard Burton, Sir Laurence Olivier, Sir JohnGielgud and Vanessa Redgrave.
Visconti’s film is to be shown in the recently restored integral version in which the genius of the director lifts the veil on the insanity of Wagner’s patron, Ludwig II, king of Bavaria. The British tv serial, which lasts almost eight hours, is one of the most beautiful musical biographies evermade for both the small and the big screens.
