Karajan. His Life and Art. The Scala Years.

8 October 2008 - 31 March 2009

Herbert von Karajan already enjoyed worldwide fame during his lifetime; time definitely established him as a mythical conductor. In 2008 we commemorate the centenary of his birth in Salzburg (1908), while almost 20 years have passed since his death in Anif (1989).

La Scala celebrates him with an exhibition that focuses on the 30 year-long relationship that existed between Karajan and La Scala, from 1941 to 1971, but also presents the multi-faceted maestro from various angles: the emotional man, the tormented musician, the artist who paid special attention to communication in all its aspects.

Four sections make up the exhibition - “At La Scala”, “In the recording studio”, “His life”, “On the rostrum” -, which makes use of an advanced technological system (video, digital lecterns) through which visitors can immerse themselves in Karajan’s life and music.

The exhibition also coincides with the publication of the book Karajan. The Master’s Style (published by Allemandi), which presents itself as a kind of intimate diary of the conductor through some of his lesser known pictures.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Eliette von Karajan on Tuesday 7 October and runs to 31 March 2009 in the Teatro alla Scala Museum.
