A sacred Mozart and a Malher who looks up to the sky: the conductor Myung-Whun Chung has chosen these two composers for the Christmas Concert on 23 December, which is traditionally broadcast on television on Christmas Eve.
Mozart’s sacred work is Vesperae solemnes de confessore K 339, a beautiful piece for soloists, chorus and orchestra. Influenced by the Italian tradition in its use of the voice, it signalled the end Mozart’s liturgical duties at Salzburg in 1780.
The work by Malher is the Symphony No 4 for soloists and orchestra, which ends on “Das himmlische Leben”, a wonderful Lied for soprano (Kate Royal) from the cycle “Des Knaben Wunderhorn”.
The concert will be broadcast live on Rai Radio 3.
