Maisenberg will first focus on Debussy and Ravel with two works, respectively Estampes and Miroirs, written in the same period by the two composers as reciprocal exchange. The French theme is enhanced by Messiaen’s Première communion de la Vierge, an excerpt from Vingt regards sur l’enfant Jésus (1944).
Berg’s superb Sonata No. 1 (1907-8) will introduce the second part of the programme, which centres on Russia. The part also includes Skriabin’s Sonata No. 2 and a rediscovery of Nikolai Medtner, a virtuoso pianist and composer who was overshadowed by Rachmaninoff, with his Songs Op. 26 (1910-11).
