After the San Carlo theatre in Naples another glorious theatre brings its savoir-faire and tradition to the Teatro alla Scala, in the framework of the “hospitality” programme launched by General Manager Stéphane Lissner three years ago. La Fenice has chosen Franceso Cavalli’s
La Didone, one of the cornerstones of the operatic genre, which was composed in Venice at the beginning of the 17th century.
La Didone was first performed at the San Cassiano theatre in 1641, almost 50 years before Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, which is the most famous but not the only musical adaptation of Virgil’s character. The librettist Francesco Busenello gives the story a happy ending, while Cavalli gets close to the tragic spirit with his music. Fabio Biondi’s Europe Galante orchestra ensures the quality and historical accuracy of the performance.
