Notes on performances

Distorted worlds, misery and loss of identity, and finally, annihilation. Chills, visions, depths of the unconscious, infirmity of the mind. A ritual homicide as the heart-rending denouement of the operatic masterpiece of the Twentieth century. Wozzeck deals with the abnormal mitigating circumstances of an underdog, with astonishing psychological and anthropological insights. Outcasts, criminals at times without blame, are compassionately addressed by the great artist. Berg’s secret musical alchemy has translated the deformations of madness for his listeners, with power and piety that continue to impress us today, ninety years on. The performance directed by Jürgen Flimm, by now an indispensable classic at La Scala, will also include the staging of some parts of the brilliant drama Woyzeck by Georg Büchner, on which the opera is based.
