Notes on the performancesOpen
The first opera of an elderly genius of composing, the Hungarian György Kurtág (1926), is a historic event. And if a legendary and reclusive artist takes on the macabre humour of Samuel Beckett, expectations are doubled. A restless and demanding musician, incapable of stylistic compromise, with his music without designs, without systems, without methods, Kurtág has previously taken on works by the great French-Irish dramatist, writer and poet, and creator of the Theatre of the Absurd. In ’91, Claudio Abbado conducted his Samuel Beckett: What is the Word and a few years later he composed …pas à pas – nulle part… with poetry by Beckett: hypnotic and surprising pieces, they seem to be created from nothing. And now, the opera.
