Notes on the performancesOpen
New productions at La Scala that have been especially favourably received by audiences have included the pairing of two celebrated one-act operas revisited with staging by director Mario Martone. New and ancient are jumbled together in the setting of Cavalleria, with the brothel, the colossal tree trunk sawn at its base, the audience of chairs in a church, a place of stares and slanderous whispers. Equally poignant is the transposition of Pagliacci into a squalid modern suburb, an encampment of vagrants and carnies at the edge of a highway ramp, perhaps a dead end. This revival of the providential show takes advantage of an exceptionally talented cast of vocalists with Violeta Urmana in Cavalleria and Fiorenza Cedolins and Marco Berti in Pagliacci. The conductor is the internationally renowned specialist of Italian opera, Carlo Rizzi.

Mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča has to withdraw from the production of Cavalleria rusticana, scheduled from 12 June, due to her mother serious health conditions.
La Scala Theatre wishes Elīna Garanča’s mother a prompt recovery. The role of Santuzza will be played by Violeta Urmana. Violeta Urmana is popular to La scala audience since her debut in Die Walküre, and after that for Armide, Messa da Requiem, Il trovatore and Iphigénie en Aulide with Riccardo Muti. In Macbeth with Kazushi Ono and in the leading role of Aida, under the baton of Riccardo Chailly for the opening night of the 2006/2007 Season and then as Amneris conducted by Barenboim in 2009.
Violeta Urmana will also play Santuzza at the Metropolitan of New York in 2016.
Stefano La Colla will play the role of Turiddu. He has been recently much appreciated for his interpreation of Calaf in Turandot conducted by Riccardo Chailly.
