Jewels

George Balanchine

Teatro alla Scala Production

From 9 March to 4 April 2014

Running Time: 2 hours intermissions included

Notes on the performancesOpen
Three choreographic and musical gems, which are often performed separate. Balanchine was inspired by the art of the jewellery designer Claude Arpels and chose music which revealed the essence of each jewel (Gabriel Fauré, from Pelléas et Mélisande and from Shyloch for Emeralds; Stravinsky’s Capriccio per piano e orchestra for Rubies; extracts from Symphony n.3 in D major op.29 by Tchaikovsky for Diamonds) Every section of the Jewels is different in terms of its music, colour and atmosphere. The dances in Emeralds bring to mind the nineteenth century French Romanticism. Rubies is bubbly and witty and fully incarnates the collaboration between Stravinsky and Balanchine. Diamonds recalls the order and grandeur of Imperial Russia and the Mariinsky Theatre, where Balanchine developed artistically.
