Roméo et Juliette

New Teatro alla Scala production
In coproduction with Deutsche Oper Berlin
In collaboration with Opéra National de Paris

From 19 December 2012 to 8 January 2013

Running Time: 1 hour 45 minutes

Notes on the performancesOpen
Inspired by the Dramatic Symphony of Hector Berlioz, Sasha Waltz, a key figure in contemporary dance, draws on the force of the music for inspiration in tackling the choreography of the story of Verona’s lovers.

Exploring the links between love and death in an intentionally timeless dimension, the emotional and abstract language of Sasha Waltz translates the nuances of Berlioz’s work. The stunning yet essential set underscores the dramatic intensity.

For the first time, the Corps de Ballet approaches the theatrical and choreographic creativity of Sasha Waltz, who makes her debut at La Scala with a production that will involve all the artistic bodies, Ballet, Orchestra and Choir, in a staged ensemble that completely combines music, song and dance.

In the opening performances of the new ballet Season, Roméo et Juliette by Sasha Waltz will showcase the talents of the two stars who gave life to the debut of the choreography at the Paris Opéra and for whom the ballet was created. Aurélie Dupont (in the performances of 19, 28 and 29 December, plus a Preview dedicated to young people on 16 December) will rediscover her partner Hervé Moreau: the pair of artists also featured in the recent revival of Roméo et Juliette at the Opéra in May 2012, screened in more than 200 cinemas in Italy and around Europe.

Contrary to statements of last April, Roberto Bolle will not, in fact, be participating in the production. Owing to difficulties in harmonizing the commitments of the protagonists, Roberto Bolle decided that the rehearsal periods foreseen would not have been sufficient to allow him to immerse himself totally in a new style. For the 2012-2013 Season, his following commitments at La Scala in Notre-Dame de Paris (February 2013), Giselle (April 2013), and L’histoire de Manon (November 2013) are confirmed.

The management of the Theatre deeply regrets to announce that due to a strike organised by the SLC-CGIL, UIL, FIALS trade unions of the Chorus, the Première of the ballet Roméo et Juliette, which opens our Ballet Season on Wednesday 19 December, is cancelled.
The refund methods are online.
