The opera of "Va’ pensiero" brought Verdi, not yet thirty, an international success which stretched from Europe to America. It is a coral opera of biblical majesty, in which the threatening Babylonian emperor stalks through a world of contrasts, starting with that of the Jewish people who he has subjugated. The incisive and inventive slant of the music gives life to interwoven events served with a generous helping of pride, resentment, superstition and the spirit of conversion.

The protagonist Leo Nucci guides a company of singers that is necessarily hardened, given the subject at hand. The new international production conceived by director Daniele Abbado will be the start to finish tale of a people, told on a two-fold narrative level, in which the destiny of the present overlaps with memory.

The conventional love story, less significant in this insurrectional ante litteram work full of a sense of terror, of elementary psychology, of instinctive primordiality, remains in the background. The sand of the desert, the sacredness of death, the thirst for spirituality and the absence of the Assyrian masses are the main motifs that inspire the performance, in which the portrait of the doubtful tyrant is sketched by a Verdi whose musical expression is particularly heated.

Ambrogio Maestri is forced to withdraw from the production of Nabucco. The role of Nabucco in all the performances (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 13, 15, 17, 20 February) will be covered by Leo Nucci.

Due to a disease Lucrecia Garcia is forced to withdraw from the performance of Nabucco on Friday 15/02. The role of Abigaille will be covered by Maria Guleghina.
