Notes on the performancesOpen
The single act which gets the three days that round off the Ring of the Niebelung underway was called Vorabend (meaning vigil) by the author. This very saga about power reveals the original sin from which everything started: the “love curse” by Alberich and the resultant conquest for world dominion involving the theft of the gold, from which the ring and magic helmet capable of changing the appearance of those that wear them are made. In this compact narration, undines, dwarves, gods and giants respectively inhabit the waters of the Rhine, the underground of the Nibelungs and the skies against which we see Walhalla, a fortress of the Germanic divinities.

The labyrinth of the story’s motifs reveals the metaphorical narration clearly, from the first darts of the Daughters of the Rhine, coquettish and malign guardians of the gold, to the grand finale where the gods reach the fort conquered through deceit, walking across a rainbow bridge.

The performance, directed masterfully by Barenboim, is extremely rich and fast-moving from a visual standpoint, with spectacular effects and fascinating references to the figurative arts.
