Notes on the performancesOpen
Hearing the name Macbetto in the verses of Francesco Maria Piave might arouse a smile or two, but the terror that grips us listening to the furious music of the young Verdi brings one out in cold shivers. The singing, which is spoken and murmured in the shadows in this opera of plots, conspiracies, suspects and vendettas translates Shakespeare’s text, so dear to Romanticism, into a melodrama . Yet even in the midst of the horror, there is a little idealism: we delude ourselves that the blood-thirsty potentates can feel remorse for their crimes, or even go mad and die as a result, just as Lady Macbeth does. If only!

The violent, creeping score will be overseen by Russian director Valery Gergiev and new yet tried-and-tested voices such as Franco Vassallo and Lucrezia Garcia.

After the Macbeth with its wrought copper backgrounds directed by Strehler, the one of rotating cube and garish colours fame under Graham Vick’s direction, Giorgio Barberio Corsetti, who is also co-creator of the set design, embarks on directing the thundering work. Great secrecy surrounds this all-new staging. We know that all the latest technologies will be used to translate the unconfessable urges- including those of the common man, perhaps even our own – that lead towards the delirium of power, peopled with images, indecipherable dreams, interior torment, and mental machinations. For which, in the end, a price is paid.
