Offenbach’s opera Les contes d’Hoffmann pays tribute to the composer’s favourite writer, E.T.A Hoffman, recounting the story of the protagonist’s unlucky lovers with the customary freshness of an operetta, fused with shades of deep melancholy. Just after his Don Giovanni, Robert Carsen’s delightful production features evocative and visible scene changes, in a dreamlike atmosphere.

Ramón Vargas takes the lead as Hoffmann in a cast featuring Ekaterina Gubanova (La Muse), Ildar Abdrazakov (Dapertutto) and William Shimell. Rachele Gilmore, Genia Kühmeier and Veronica Simeoni perform as the poet’s three ill-fated lovers. Marko Letonja conducts, in his first return to La Scala after the success of The Makropulos Case.
