Notes on the performancesOpen
Die Frau ohne Schatten sees the debut of director Claus Guth. The formidable result of the collaboration between Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, this symbolic and colourful tale takes as its central theme the mysterious significance of shadow. As Hofmannsthal wrote to Strauss: “It is a fairy tale with two men confronting two women, and […] The opera […] would be to the Magic Flute what Der Rosenkavalier is to the Marriage of Figaro”.

Following in the steps of Luc Bondy’s Salome and Herbert Wernicke’s Der Rosenkavalier, Die Frau ohne Schatten is the next instalment in the Strauss cycle at La Scala and the first of four works in co-production with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Marc Albrecht conducts.

The new conductor on the music stand will be Marc Albrecht, new Amsterdam Opera Musical Director, and higly regarded performer of Strauss’ music.
