Notes on the performancesOpen
Jules Massenet’s Manon revisits the great early-eighteenth-century French literary classic by Prévost. Manon, a young girl destined for the convent, develops an appetite for luxury and society life, and discovers the allure of love. The nobler choice will be made in the end, but it will be too late.

Manon is another new production that marks the La Scala debut of Fabio Luisi, for sixteen years chief conductor of Dresden Semperoper and recently named principal guest conductor of the Metropolitan Opera. The production, by Laurent Pelly, who enjoyed great success in 2009/2010 with his L’Elisir d’amore, sees the return of Nathalie Dessay as Manon, who will perform opposite Matthew Polenzani’s Des Grieux.
