Any man who wishes to win the hand of the cruel Turandot must solve three riddles. Death awaits he who fails. Now it is Calaf’s turn to gather the strength and the fortune to break through the icy heart of the princess.

Turandot is Puccini’s only fairytale opera, set in a fantastical Peking in legendary time. Love and death are epitomised in the character of the beautiful Turandot, a conflict along the lines of Greek tragedy. And, as ever in Puccini, it is a woman – the slave girl Liù – who sacrifices herself for love.

The exceptional and first-rate cast features Maria Guleghina as Turandot and Marco Berti as Calaf, under the baton of Valery Gergiev, who brings his exceptional colouristic sensitivity to Puccini’s orchestra. Giorgio Barberio Corsetti directs in his La Scala debut.
