Notes on the performancesOpen
From Shakespeare to Gounod, the most famous love story of all time voices its affinity for sorrow and melancholy. Roméo et Juliette returns to La Scala after a long break in the Bartlett Sher staging premiered at the Salzburg Festival by a cast of young artists, not least the musical director, French Canadian Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Gergiev’s successor at the Rotterdam Philharmonic, who makes his La Scala debut. Nino Machaidze and Vittorio Grigolo take the roles of Verona’s star-crossed lovers in the French language version.
