Claudio Monteverdi

New production of the Teatro alla Scala

From 19 to 30 September 2011

Running Time: 3 hours 10 minutes

Sung in Italian with electronic libretto in Italian, English

Notes on the performancesOpen
After the success of Orfeo, the Monteverdi cycle continues with Il ritorno di Ulisse in patria, the opera inspired by the final verses of the Odyssey. Three thousand years after Homer and four centuries on from Monteverdi, Ulysses continues to represent man’s constant quest as a raison d’être.

A cast of period specialists, including Monica Bacelli, who has many acclaimed performances at La Scala under her belt, and Sara Mingardo, is again conducted by Rinaldo Alessandrini, a leading authority on Monteverdi’s music.

The production will be staged by the master of essentiality in space and light Bob Wilson, producer of the first of the three operas in the cycle, which ends with L’incoronazione di Poppea in 2014.
