Die Zauberflöte

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

New Production

From 20 March to 3 April 2011

Running Time: 3 hours

Sung in German with electronic libretto in Italian, English, German

Notes on the performancesOpen
“A work worthy to be performed at the most solemn festivities, before the greatest of kings,” said Salieri of Die Zauberflöte: wishful thinking on his part, since only a popular theatre on the city outskirts would open its doors to Mozart’s masterpiece, penned in the last year of his life.

Beneath its fairy-tale surface, the Magic Flute conceals the mysteries of an initiation ritual and a multi-layered plot, packed with allegories to fire up the imagination.

Accompanying us on our journey are musical director Roland Böer, a cast of first-class Mozart performers and a magnificent production by William Kentridge, who has received widespread critical acclaim in Europe. And so, “by the power of music we walk cheerfully through the dark night of death”.

On 24 March the performance was shown live in cinemas in Italy, Europe and the US.
