Notes on the performancesOpen
After the success of A midsummer night’s dream, the music of Benjamin Britten returns to La Scala in the form of his last great operatic masterpiece.

Taken from Thomas Mann, the story tells of an unconventional and “guilty” passion; of the passing of time; of lost youth, sought out in the beauty of an untouchable boy; of physical decay mirrored in spiritual decline. All the colours of decay in Mann’s novella, so loved by film director Visconti, are faithfully reproduced in the score of the great English composer.

In the lead role is John Graham-Hall, one of today’s finest portrayers of Gustav von Aschenbach on the operatic scene. Death in Venice marks the La Scala debuts of the exceptionally talented producer Deborah Warner and the young Edward Gardner, music director of English National Opera.
