Amilcare Ponchielli’s La Gioconda based on a libretto by Arrigo Boito (signed with the
pseudonym Tobia Gorrio), whose premiere took place at La Scala in 1876, is a masterpiece that must be known in order to comprehend the evolution of melodrama in the second half of the nineteenth century, oscillating between tradition and the cultural
stirrings of the “Scapigliatura”: a lurid drama in the shadows of an opulent and menacing Venice, perfect material for a director with the narrative talent of Davide Livermore, who returns at the end of the Season in a team with the set designers of Giò Forma and the costume designer Mariana Fracasso. La Gioconda is famous also because the six voice types are equally represented, with demanding arias that are sure to enthral audiences. The cast consists of Saioa Hernández, Francesco Meli, Daniela Barcellona, Luca Salsi, Judit Kutasi and Roberto Tagliavini, Ádám Fischer conducting.
