Zubin Mehta’s vast repertoire also extends to the language of historical avant-gardes: Mehta was among the most authoritative interpreters of Schönberg’s music in Vienna when the city was rediscovering the works of Jewish composers after the terrible years of the Nazi dictatorship. Mehta developed a friendship with Schönberg’s daughter, Nuria, and her husband Luigi Nono, whose music he had always appreciated. Consequently, he desired to associate the two composers by presenting together these famous single-act productions of theirs. Nono’s music has been performed regularly at La Scala thanks to the passion of musicians such as Claudio Abbado, Maurizio Pollini and Riccardo Chailly, but the last opera of his being staged at La Scala was Prometeo in 1985. The production is directed by Damiano Michieletto and the cast includes the outstanding Camilla Nylund in Erwartung.
