The performance of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker® a Balanchine® Ballet, is presented by arrangement with The George Balanchine Trust and has been produced in accordance with the Balanchine Style® and Balanchine Technique® Service standards established and provided by the Trust.

After the extraordinary success of its Italian debut at La Scala with the new, exquisite and
poetic sets and costumes by Margherita Palli, George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker®, one of the most famous productions of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece, returns to the stage. This extraordinary ballet with thrilling scenes of great impact deploys to the full the La Scala Ballet and the youngest pupils of the School, involved in large numbers. The charming choreography develops over the two acts, bringing us from reality to fantasy, enthralling even the youngest audiences with atmosphere and enchantment, wonder and magic. The first act introduces the characters – the children Stahlbaum, Marie and Fritz, Herr Drosselmeyer and his nephew – and also begins the transition from reality to fantasy with the splendid Waltz of the Snowflakes. In the second act the transformation is complete, with the entrance to the Realm of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The music will be performed by the La Scala Academy Orchestra, conducted by Felix Korobov.
