NOTES ON THE PERFORMANCE

La Cenerentola directed by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle in 1973 is undoubtedly one of the most symbolic productions of the famous Rossini renaissance promoted by Claudio Abbado at La Scala. Shelving once and for all the farcical performances of the past, Abbado and Ponnelle’s modern rendition of Rossini’s three greatest comic operas set the standard for a contemporary interpretation of theatre defined by music, its rhythm, and the inputs suggested by the score. La Scala presents La Cenerentola as a celebratory closing act to the 150th anniversary of the composer’s death, entrusting the direction to Ottavio Dantone and the leading role of Angelina to Marianne Crebassa.
