NOTES ON THE PERFORMANCE

Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannstahl’s metatheatrical masterpiece returns to La Scala in a new production directed by young British talent Frederic Wake-Walker, whose distinctive mark is a multifarious theatrical style, and under the musical guidance of Strauss expert Franz Welser-Möst. Alternating in the role of the Prima Donna / Ariadne are Krassimira Stoyanova – by now much loved by the Milanese public – and Tamara Wilson, while the most sought-after coloratura soprano of our time, Sabine Devieilhe, stars as Zerbinetta. Michael König sings Bacchus alongside Markus Werba as the Music Master, while Superintendent Alexander Pereira makes his debut on the stage of La Scala in the spoken part of the Major Domo.
