While La Scala has hosted many illustrious productions of Orfeo ed Euridice – from that of Furtwängler with Fedora Barbieri as protagonist, to the one conducted by Riccardo Muti and directed by Roberto de Simone –, this year, for the first time ever, the opera will be staged in its full-length version in French dating to 1774. Produced for Covent Garden by director John Fulljames and choreographer Hofesh Shechter, in this version the orchestra literally takes centre stage. Featuring Juan Diego Flórez, who returns to La Scala for this unique occasion, Christiane Karg and Fatma Said – both of whom trained at the Academy of La Scala – the sumptuous production falls under the musical guidance of Michele Mariotti, a young yet highly appreciated Maestro.
