| | Dear user, In April too La Scala has a lot to offer. This month sees two composers, and two works of the great Italian repertoire, pass each other the baton. Verdi arrives on Tuesday 1 April for the revival of Macbeth, in the staging that Graham Vick created for the Season’s Opening in 1997 and which was revived in 2001 and 2003. Puccini leaves with the new production of his Trittico, which ends its run on 2 April. Ten performances of Macbeth alternate with the revivals of Swan Lake, with the etoile Svetlana Zakharova and the guest artist Guillaume Côté. There are also high-profile nights, such as Maurizio Pollini’s piano recital (hosted at La Scala but organised by the Società dei Concerti) and the recital of Ian Bostridge, a refined tenor whose repertoire ranges from Handel to Britten and from Mozart to Stravinsky. Three concerts of the symphonic season also celebrate the debut of Marin Alsop, the first female conductor ever to stand on the podium of La Scala. Born in New York and trained at Yale and at the Julliard School, Marin Alsop performs every season at the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, London Symphony and Royal Philharmonic. She is also guest conductor of the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Tonhalle Zurich, Orchestre de Paris, Boston Symphony and Tokyo Philharmonic. The calendar of side-activities is a rich one, and includes the performances of the students of the Academy, the concert in the “La Scala with the Family” and the “Invitation for the Young and the Elderly” series.
